Henry VIII, Act II, Scene IV The Trial of Queen Katherine by Henry Andrews

Finally things are progressing along in the film industry, but I cannot offer a complete eight listing of upcoming movies and shows. Yeesh! What does a lady have to do around here to get consistent services from Hollywood film productions? All movies and shows below have recently come out or will be debuting in the next three months. I have expanded my search to include delving into the catalogs of Amazon Videos, Hulu, and YouTube which may not otherwise show up on Internet Movie Database (my number one source, I swear by.) Naturally, the cinematic features are all of the 19th century variety. Despite a truncated selection of four,  I still have my eye on 56 movies that take place during the 1800s that have yet to be completed or set a firm release date. Does it look like I have a bottomless well of patience? I do not! Let us focus on the good. Observe below! What movie or show are you hyped to see?

Making History PosterMaking History

Back on March 5th this comedic television show debuted on Fox on Sundays. “It follows three friends from two different centuries as they try to balance the thrill of time travel with the mundane concerns of their present lives.” So, obviously this show encompasses other eras aside from the 19th century. Leighton Meister (Blair Waldorf is that you?!) headlines along side Adam Pally (last seen in the Mindy Project); stand up comedian Yassir Lester rounds out the cast. The ratings are decent, so it is worth a look!

The Son PosterThe Son

Another series premiered last month is The Son on AMC. “A multi-generational epic telling  of the story of America’s birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas oil empire.” This one hour saga features Pierce Bronsnan (007! The guy from Mrs. Doubtfire!), Henry Garrett (previously seen in Poldark), and the beautiful Mexican actress Paola Nunez  as Maria Garcia. According to the reviews, you ought to watch The Son. I like Pierce Brosnan and I always appreciate Latina actors crossing over for cultural diversity on film.

A Quiet Passion PosterA Quiet Passion

“The story of American poet Emily Dickinson from her early days as a young schoolgirl to her later years as a reclusive, unrecognizable artist.” Starring Cynthia Nixon (Hello, Miranda from Sex and the City!) as the poet, herself, Jennifer Ehle (the “original” Elizabeth Bennett opposite of Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice) plays Emily’s sister, Lavinia, and actor Duncan Duff portraying older brother, Austin. The film was released on April 9th and has received solid reviews from movie-goers. Personally, while this may seem sacrilegious coming from a  Librarian and one who professes a love for most 19th century related things, I have never been a huge fan of Emily Dickinson. The prose is sparse and far too restrained for my taste. I prefer rhythm and a painted picture, more over her life was not “entertaining,” not terribly colorful and mostly by her own choice. Is that such a terrible way to judge someone? Perhaps, but to each his own.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales PosterPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales

Due out May 26th, this action adventure film follows “Captain Jack Sparrow as he searches for the trident of Poseidon.”  How many Pirates movies has there been now? What number are we on now? Four? Oh! Five! Geez, but who doesn’t like Johnny Depp as Sparrow?! Orlando Bloom returns (yes!) as does Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley! Javier Bardem joins the crew as Captain Salazar (Woot! Another Latino!). . . Now, pirate lore tends to stem from the 1700s to the 1800s, so I thought to include it here, to beef up my listicle, but it may, in fact, be a 18th century affair. Supposedly the last installment of the Pirate franchise, but there are whispers of a sixth . . .  *whispers* Please don’t beat a dead horse, like Fast and the Furious.

The first Pre-Reads of 2017 are here! With all the excitement of my new pupper and his Instagram account, I am rushing to finish this post on time. The process was made more lengthy (in a pleasant way) because the list of new 19th century books debuting this month was incredibly large; over 20 for non-fiction (almost unheard of) and almost 40 for fiction! Lots of sifting was needed. So you best believe the list below is the crème de la crème of the pile! We are talking superbly reviewed tomes to add to your To Read List. –I do wonder how much the PBS series Victoria is influencing publications, not that I am against it in any way. –More people to share the love with!

Below are sixteen titles, eight fiction, eight non-fiction books pertaining to the 19th century in some way. They come highly reviewed with Kirkus Review, Library Journal, Publisher’s Weekly, Amazon, and Baker and Taylor recommendations. Summaries and reviews provided are lifted straight from these sources. Each book was released just this month (for the first time ever, there are not any reprints that I am are of! Astounding!) Likewise, because these publications are hot off the press, I have not personally read any of them, but some are making their way on to my own To Read List. What books are you adding to your list? I would love to hear your preference in the comment section below as well as any reviews after reading them.

Image result for "angel reading" 19th century paintingThe last Pre-Reads post of the year is brought to you by a well-read angel.–No, not me, that lovely being on the left over there. S/he has guided the sixteen choices brought to you today; eight fiction and eight non-fiction titles that were published or reprinted this December. All items are highly reviewed from Amazon, Baker and Taylor, Kirkus Review, Library Journal, and Publishers Weekly. The summaries provided are straight from these sources as well. Since these titles are newly published, I have not had a chance to read them ahead of time, so I am unable to recommend one book over the other for you. However, I always encourage you to share your own reviews and comments.

This month proved to be more than challenging for the fiction section as 90% of Victorian-esque novels are Romance. Evidently there is not a large market for 1800s inspired Christmas books focusing on peace on Earth and good will toward men. . . Thus said, I managed to uncover other titles you might find interesting. There are a couple of Sagas, the closing of a Steampunk trilogy, time-travel!, a Western featuring good ol’ Arizona, and a fantasy to round out the offerings. The non-fiction section will be your best bet if you are looking for meat to your reading choices and less saccharine. The non-fiction also displays a couple of stories and notes from the Wild West, spirits in New Orleans, pioneering women in science and journalism, a new twist on the ascension story of our beloved Queen, a close view of a Victorian workhouse, and a detailed perspective of 19th century fashion! Which ones are you planning on picking up? Leave a note in the comment section.
